Polish Lowland Sheepdogs are avid workers. While they’re outgoing, friendly and boisterous, they require some type of job. They can be very good companions for children and will adapt to other pets. These dogs have a strong instinct to herd and will nip heels in order to accomplish that goal. On the whole though, they have a stable, balanced personality.
Polish Lowland Sheepdogs are also very protective and have been known to bite. It is very important to train these dogs with consistency and fairness. These dogs also need to be socialized at an early age, or they can easily become fear biters and barkers. Once they are trained, they tend to be eager to please their owners and role model members of a happy family.
Typically, these dogs require a great deal of exercise and mental activity. If you do not take time to play with Polish Lowland Sheepdogs, or give them a job, they will quickly get into trouble. While they make wonderful traveling partners, care must be taken to ensure they do not become overheated in cars.
Polish Lowland Sheepdogs require a thorough brushing once a week to prevent mats and tangles. Nails should also be kept short. Polish Lowland Sheepdogs are ideal for people who have allergies, as they rarely shed. These dogs tend to have a minimum of health problems. A low protein diet is recommended for keeping them fit and healthy.
The Polish Lowland Sheepdog traces its ancestry back to the 1300's. They were used primarily for herding farm animals. These dogs were almost exterminated during WWII. Almost all Polish Lowland Sheepdogs today trace their ancestry back to a single male.
