The Pomchi is not a purebred dog, nor is it an AKC recognized breed. Pomchi dogs are a hybrid or cross breed developed from the Pomeranian and the Chihuahua. However, the cross is recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC).

The Pomchi is a friendly and outgoing little dog. They adapt well to families and are very suitable for elderly people looking for a low-maintenance, but upbeat companion. Because the Pomchi is a combination of Pomeranian and Chihuahua, it’s not always easy to determine the temperament of individual dogs. Researching the bloodlines of the parent dogs may be of some help.

For the most part, Pomchis are happy to live indoors. Like cats, they’re inclined to find their own entertainment and can get most of their exercise indoors. Typically, Pomchis are not suited to cold weather. Care also needs to be taken to ensure that their skin is not scratched or abraded. It’s also important to make sure that children do not handle them roughly, as they can be fragile.

As small as Pomchis are, they make excellent watch dogs. Like a proud Chihuahua, they often think they’re much bigger than they are and are known to protect their families. These dogs are very intelligent and can be trained with consistency and patience.

Pomchis require minimal grooming. An occasional brushing will keep them healthy and sleek looking. Because the Pomchi has only been an established mixed breed since 1988, there are no known diseases associated with them. As may be expected of small dogs, they may need extra attention for their eyes and teeth.

Historically, the Pomchi is one of several contemporary, designer dogs. They are experimental dogs created by breeders looking to create healthier animals with beneficial traits from both parent breeds.
