Pomeranians can be very charming and fit well into most households. Overall, they tend to be independent and may not always get along with small children, but they’re usually get along well with other animals. Care should be taken with larger dogs, as the Pomeranian often thinks it’s bigger than it is, and may attempt to mount or tackle a larger dog. Despite their small size, the Pomeranians are known for making excellent watch dogs thanks to their confidence.
Although modern Pomeranians are very small, their ancestors weighed up to 30 pounds and were employed in herding farm animals. It is thought that Queen Victoria's preference for the smaller dogs led breeders to develop smaller animals. Pomeranians originated in Prussia. Many of these dogs still carry the herding instincts and may be prone to heel nipping.
On the whole, Pomeranians are ideal for senior citizens. They don't necessarily require a walk each day and can get most of their exercise indoors. If you do head outside for a healthy walk, Pomeranians shouldn't be allowed off a leash. These dogs are very curious and intelligent and they love to chase. Because of their playful nature, Poms love toys and can spend hours entertaining themselves with a bone, chew toy or your slippers!
When training a Pomeranian, it is important to establish who the master is. With a firm hand, these dogs will learn tricks quickly and make enjoyable companions. They can be stubborn if handled the wrong way. Problem barking and biting can develop without adequate socialization.
The Pomeranian has a long, double coat. This needs to be brushed frequently to prevent mats and tangles. Ears and eyes also need to be cleaned on a daily basis. Pomeranians require routine dental care to manage tartar buildup.
Pomeranians usually enjoy good health during their lifespan. Some can suffer from an array of illnesses. These include eye infections and knee problems. Tooth loss, bald patches and heart conditions may also develop with age.
