Poodles are a highly adaptable breed, prized for their non-shedding coat and intelligence. They're as comfortable acting as hunting dogs as they are companions to children and senior citizens. Poodles tend to be very smart and easy to train. They're ideal for a first time dog owner and families with young children.
Depending on the temperament of the parents, Poodles can be high-strung. However, most tend to be upbeat, cheerful and flexible. It’s important to find a Poodle that will match your temperament expectations. While Poodles are not known to be aggressive, they do need socialization as part of their training and will get along well with other dogs.
Poodles can be very emotional and will become distressed if you leave them out of family activities. They like to be immersed in family fun and in on the action. These dogs are eager to please their owners, but can be hesitant about accepting strangers. If not trained properly, Poodles can be problem barkers, as well as biters.
Although Poodles do not require fancy clipping of their fur, they do require a great deal of grooming. This includes brushing, clipping and bathing. Because their fur tends to be too heavy, leaving their fur to grow naturally can result in joint and bone problems. Routine dental care is also crucial.
Poodles tend to suffer from a number of eye and ear diseases. Epilepsy and diabetes can also be very common. These dogs are also known to have allergies to a number of shampoos and other chemicals.
Historically, Poodles go back at least 400 years. They were originally used extensively as hunting dogs and guard dogs. It is not known precisely what part of Europe these dogs originated from, but contemporary historians tend to associate them with France, as Poodles are a favorite of that nation.
