The Portuguese Podengo is an FSS (Foundation Stock Service) breed. That means it isn’t recognized as an official breed by the American Kennel Club (AKC), but it will be soon. Groups like the Portuguese Podengo Club of America are committed to obtaining recognition of the breed as well as preserving and celebrating it. For breed standards, breeders and showers can refer to the three different breed standards maintained by the FCI, the KC and the UKC.

Historically, the Portuguese Podengo originated in Spain and Portugal. It is thought they are distantly related to the Pharaoh Hounds and also the smaller Iberian Wolves. These dogs have been used in hunting rabbits and other game. They work well in packs and are still used as hunters today.

The breed name “Portuguese Podengo” actually describes three different kinds of dogs. While they all belong to the same breed, they differ widely in average sizes. Overall though, the Portuguese Podengo tends to be outgoing and friendly. It’s a good dog for households with children. They also make great watch dogs, but have a tendency to fight with other dogs.

Portuguese Podengos are very active and not suitable for apartments or confined areas. They're also not recommended for cooler climates. This tropical dog tends to prefer warm weather and easy breezes. The Portuguese Podengo also needs a great deal of daily exercise. They enjoy a brisk walk, or a jog – making them the ideal companion for an active owner. Portuguese Podengos also enjoy games that utilize their innate hunting and tracking abilities. While these dogs can be independent, they do need to have a routine and adequate attention. Training is not difficult, but requires consistence.

Very little grooming is required for the Portuguese Podengo. An occasional brushing or combing will keep them looking sleek and healthy looking. Nails should be kept short.

For the most part, Portuguese Podengos enjoy good health throughout their lifespan. Because they are not over bred, they tend to be free of most genetic ailments. Because smaller and medium sized dogs are becoming more popular, extra research may be required to ensure the puppies are healthy.
