The Portuguese Water Dog - a muscular, medium-sized and hardy dog with webbed feet -was obviously built for work both in the water and on land. Their webbed feet, waterproof coat and endurance make this dog an exceptional swimmer and diver, while their loyalty, strength and speed make them great on land. All of this combined with their intelligence and spirit make this dog an amazing asset to any proud owner.
For many centuries fisherman have prized this breed for their ability to guard the catch and boats when in port, their ability to retrieve anything that fell overboard and their willingness to carry messages between boats.
Overall, Portuguese Water Dogs are very lively and active, yet extremely obedient with their master. Their courage, endurance, affection and loyalty, as well as their ability to get along with children have made them a very popular breed. They love to work and they to play, especially with their owners. If you’re looking for a dog that enjoys a game of fetch and lots of exercise, this is the pet for you.
When training a Portuguese Water Dog, consistency is the key. They’re quick to learn, but they also can be willful and may try to outsmart their owner given the opportunity.
This breed’s coat is thick and wavy and grows slowly. It should be combed and brushed regularly to maintain its appearance.
The Portuguese Water Dog may be susceptible to GM-1 Storage Disease, a fatal nerve condition that can appear around 6 months old. Veterinarians and breeders also suggest you ask about the dogs risk for hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy.
