With its thickset, stocky, almost-square body and expressive dark eyes, the Pug is an easily recognizable dog. They have a distinctive gait, sometimes described as rolling, with strong and straight limbs that give them an authoritative stance. Despite his mean-looking face though, the Pug is very affectionate and extremely loyal.
One of the oldest breeds, the Pug is believed to have originated in Asia around 400 BC. It was fashionable to own a Pug and they traveled around quite a bit to Japanese and Tibetan monasteries.
Pugs have a chipper and clever personality that can sometimes get them into trouble. Overall, the Pub punches a lot of dog into such a small body, so prospective owners should be ready for a dog with real personality. Typically, they behave admirably with children, as well as visitors and get along with other pets.
When training a Pug, they tend to get bored if the tasks are too repetitive, so trainers should try to add a little variety by mixing up the activities and the treat rewards.
A Pug is stressed by hot and cold weather and has a tendency to catch colds. Many have chronic breathing problems due to allergies and their short muzzle. If you plan on breeding your Pug keep in mind they do not do well in whelping and many times a Cesarean is necessary. Grooming a Pug’s coat is fairly easy; using a firm bristle brush with regularity is all that is required. They tend to get chilled so be sure to dry them thoroughly after a bath.
