The Pugapoo is not a purebred dog, nor is it an AKC recognized breed. Pugapoo dogs are a hybrid or cross breed developed from the Poodle and the Pug. However, the cross is recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC).
Being a hybrid breed, Pugapoos are likely to end up with traits from both parent breeds. Typically, a Pugapoo will show the curly Poodle coat that’s non-shedding, but personality can differ depending on the mix.
The Pugapoo is known to exhibit a willful nature at times, which may make training one a frustrating experience for the less-than-patient trainer. Prospective owners should have a sense of humor and be willing to enjoy their mischievous rascals.
Some Pugapoos are true crosses between Pugs and Poodles, while others are the result of successive generations, created by breeding Pugapoos with Pugapoos. These dogs are typically referred to as “multigenerational.” The Pugapoo comes in a range of colors – white, black, sable and patterned coats.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for patellar luxation, liver shunts, hypoglycemia, pancreatitis and lymphangiactasia. Typically though, hybrid breeds are less vulnerable to breed-specific or genetic health issues.
