The Puggle is not a purebred dog, nor is it an AKC recognized breed. Puggle dogs are a hybrid or cross breed developed from the Poodle and the Beagle. However, the cross is recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC).

Because the Puggle is a mixed breed, many of its traits and characteristics may come from either parent. In this case, both the Beagle and the Poodle have similar temperaments and characteristics such as being good with children, being lively and even-tempered. So, prospective owners can often expect these common characteristics to come out. Both breeds also possess loving dispositions, dignity and playfulness.

Prospective owners like that they can combine the personality of the Beagle with the intelligence and non-shedding coat of the Poodle. The only grooming requirements are brushing its smooth, short coat on a regular basis and bathing only if necessary.

Some Puggles are true crosses between Beagles and Poodles, while others are the result of successive generations, created by breeding Puggle with Puggle. These dogs are typically referred to as “multigenerational.” The Puggle comes in a range of colors – white, black, sable, black and tan and patterned coats.

There are a few health issues that the Puggle may be prone to such as keratites and skin problems. It is also recommended that you have them checked for epilepsy.
