One of the first things many notice about the Puli is their strikingly unique corded coat. Often described as dreadlocked or “like a mop,” the Puli’s inimitable coat makes them an instantly recognizable breed.

Hungarian shepherds have used the Puli for years, prized for herding sheep with their light and agile movement. Their build is medium and appears somewhat square but is very compact. Their agile movement is a very distinctive, light-footed and flowing gait.

The intelligent Puli are known to be a little stubborn but are normally easily trained with patient and firm training. They are loyal and devoted to their family and easily acclimate themselves to different surroundings and situations.

Although never aggressive, the Puli are wary of strangers and if they perceive any threat to their family they will voice their displeasure. They may not get along with younger children if they are teased or treated roughly.

As for grooming their distinctive “corded” coat, the mats should be separated by hand on a regular basis. Beginning at the tips, tear apart the clumps by hand all the way to their skin. Time consuming yes, but it can be a somewhat relaxing time for both owner and dog. After bathing if a dryer is used on their coat it may take several hours to dry. Without a dryer it may take several days.

Breeders advise having them checked for hip dysplasia, but other than that they appear to be a healthy breed.
