The Pumi is an FSS (Foundation Stock Service) breed. That means it isn’t recognized as an official breed by the American Kennel Club (AKC), but it will be soon. Groups like the Hungarian Pumi Club of America are committed to obtaining recognition of the breed as well as preserving and celebrating it. For breed standards, breeders and showers can refer to the four breed standards maintained by the FCI, the UKC, the NZKC and the ANKC.
A Pumi is a vigorous and sturdily built sheep dog that is watchful, energetic and alert making them a successful guard dog as well. Their intelligence makes them easy to train as they grasp things quickly. In terms of appearance, the Pumi is a medium-sized dog with a distinctive long muzzle and oblique, dark eyes. They possess strong feet with elastic pads and hard nails.
The Pumi traditionally excelled at shepherding and catching small vermin, which made them great farm dogs. It’s believed that they were brought into Hungary sometime during the 17th or 18th century.
Very affectionate with their master and happiest when at home surrounded by their family and familiar faces, they tend to be buoyant and cheerful dogs. They can get along with older children, but some tend to be mistrustful of strangers. They do have a tendency to wander and have been known to be dog aggressive. Prospective owners should be careful when introducing their Pumi to new dogs.
Their coat, braided and of medium length appears to be difficult to groom. However that’s typically not true, as even with its length it does not mat easily. Regular brushing will keep their coats in shape.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for patellar luxation, liver shunts, hypoglycemia, pancreatitis and lymphangiactasia. Typically though, hybrid breeds are less vulnerable to breed-specific or genetic health issues.
