The Pyrenean Shepherd is an FSS (Foundation Stock Service) breed. That means it isn’t recognized as an official breed by the American Kennel Club (AKC), but it will be soon. Groups like the Pyrenean Shepherd Club of America are committed to obtaining recognition of the breed as well as preserving and celebrating it. For breed standards, breeders and showers can refer to the four breed standards maintained by the FCI, the UKC, the CKC, and the KC.

A Pyrenean Shepherd’s face, with its dark, intelligent eyes, is very expressive. Overall, it’s a sinewy dog with what has been described as a “flowing” gait makes them superb athletes.

This shepherding breed has an amazingly powerful herding instinct that they seem to be born with, actually needing no prior training in order to handle the herd and able to adapt to many different scenarios using pure instinct.

As a companion, they have the tendency to become very attached to their owner and are very cognizant of the owner’s moods. They are most happy when they are included in everything going on around them and like to be included in all family activities.

Although wary and distrustful of strangers, they are the complete opposite with their family. A Pyrenean Shepherd is a loyal dog dedicated to protecting his family. Parents should watch for its herding instinct as they may find their children being herded around the house by a protective Pyreneane.

Grooming a Pyrenean Shepherd is usually simple as its coat doesn’t tangle easily and only needs occasional brushing.

The Pyrenean Shepherd has no known serious health issues and tends to be a healthy and hardy breed. Because the dogs are rare outside of its native France, prospective owners may have to wait to find an available puppy.
