The Rat Terrier is an FSS (Foundation Stock Service) breed. That means it isn’t recognized as an official breed by the American Kennel Club (AKC), but it will be soon. Groups like the Rat Terrier Club of America and the National Rat Terrier Association are committed to obtaining recognition of the breed as well as preserving and celebrating it. For breed standards, breeders and showers can refer to the breed standard maintained by the UKC.
Most likely a cross between Smooth Fox Terriers, Manchester Terriers and Whippets, the Rat Terrier originated in England. When they first became popular in America, Italian Greyhounds and Beagles may have been added to the genetic mix. Overall, a Rat Terrier is a strong shouldered, well-muscled dog with powerful legs and bat-like ears. Their bodies are compact, yet meaty.
Being a well mannered, eager to please dog, the Rat Terrier is an easy dog to train. They like task-oriented work that appeals to their terrier senses. Try hide and seek games or toys with hidden treats that they have to dig out.
If you’re looking for an intelligent, alert, lively and inquisitive companion that’s also good with children, then the Rat Terrier is the dog for you. They tend to be slightly territorial, but will be friendly to strangers. They have been called lively, feisty and fearless, all obvious traits of a true terrier.
The Rat Terrier is exceptionally easy to groom requiring only an occasional brushing to remove the dead hair. It’s advisable to have this dog checked for cleft palette, mange, skin allergies, hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia.
