A handsome, strong and robust dog, the Redbone Coonhound has thick, strong pads on their compact and cat-like paws. Their coat is a smooth and flat red coat much like that of a Beagle. An American breed, the Redbone is a direct result of crossing Bloodhounds and Foxhounds. Later a more developed sense of smell and swiftness resulted from selective breeding making them ideal for hunting large and small prey in a pack.
Very even-tempered, happy and surprisingly affectionate, the Redbone Coonhound is great with children and has a pleasant sounding bark. Similar to other Coonhounds, the Redbone is alert, quick and will work in any type of weather or terrain. With its natural treeing instinct they excel at hunting raccoons, bobcats, bear and cougars.
Even though they are affectionate, they need to be socialized at a very early age along with basic obedience such as walking on a leash. Because of its naturally ingrained scent and tracking instincts, an unleashed or unfenced Redbone Coonhound can quickly become a lost dog. That said, their tolerant and loving nature combined with their scent abilities, make them a prime choice for search and rescue work.
Owners should also be careful with smaller, non-dog pets like guinea pigs or rabbits. If not socialized from a young age, the Redbone will hunt them as they do raccoons.
Their coats are short, smooth and yet coarse enough to provide them protection. The Redbone Coonhound needs little more than a weekly brushing to keep shedding at bay.
The Redbone Coonhound, a fairly healthy breed, has some common problems such as obesity and hip dysplasia that you want to watch out for.
