An extremely large, handsome and muscular hound, the Rhodesian Ridgeback was named for a very unique characteristic - a defined symmetrical ridge that runs down its back where the hair actually grows in the opposite direction from the rest of the coat. It’s believed that some native tribes in South Africa originated this breed by crossing some ridgeback dogs and other unknown breeds. They were capable of hunting game, guarding property, retrieving and watching children.

Always an obedient and gentle dog when at home, the Rhodesian can be ferocious when hunting. They need consistent training at an early age before they become too large to handle as their intelligence allows them to learn quickly but may also make them a little stubborn.

Typically though, once a Ridgeback respects a person, he quickly adapts. The breed’s independent streak means they’ll test owners and push, but with the right owner, they quickly become a loyal dog ready to serve. A firm trainer who delivers a variety of routines and a strong hand usually gets the best results.

The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a cunning but straightforward dog that is loyal to the family. They are vigilant, brave and usually reserved toward strangers. Because of their ranch upbringing, the Ridgeback is a dog with a seemingly endless amount of energy and a strong hunting instinct. Prospective owners need to be prepared to give their dogs lots of exercise and a well-fenced yard.

In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, thyroid problems, cataracts, deafness, cancer and dermoid sinus.
