Muscular and athletic, the Rottweiler has a powerful, massive body that is compact, but substantial enough to show agility, endurance and great strength. An expression of loyalty and goodwill can often be seen in their dark eyes.

This is an intelligent breed that needs both mental and physical stimulation. A well-trained and socialized Rottweiler thrives on attention from its owner and has a strong desire to please them.

Like many of the guarding, protection breeds, they are typically a dominant dog and in an unfamiliar situation may resort to aggressiveness. The decision to own a Rottweiler should be carefully considered. This protective trait, along with its large size and incredible strength, make it a breed that only experienced dog owners should consider. Even so, early and repeated socializing with as many people and animals as possible is an important step.

The Rottweiler is probably descended from the Italian Mastiff. During the Middle Ages, it was used as a herd dog and originally bred in the German town of Rottweil in Wurttemberg to haul loads and guard livestock. Today, the Rottweiler excels at tracking, herding, watch dogging, guarding, police work, carting, competitive obedience and schutzhund.

The latent herding and droving instinct in the breed can sometimes become apparent. The dog will often shoulder or push family members and other animals if he feels they need to be ‘herded.” Although most Rottweilers are both loving and patient with children, parents should be aware of this instinct and work to curb it from a young age.

Rottweilers are prone to ACL, meaning the knee is twisted beyond normal range of movement as well as hip dysplasia. Veterinarians and breeders suggest that you also ask about the dog’s risk for progressive retinal atrophy, heart defects, cancer, bloat and hypothyroidism.
