Stunning and striking, the Russian Blue knows how to get your attention. Distinguished by their blue and silver color, the Russian is unique because of its double coat with guard hairs that are blue with silver tips, giving it an almost shimmering appearance as it walks through a room. Russian Blues are leaner, medium-sized cats with normally green eyes and big, pointed ears.
The breed is thought to be very intelligent and they are usually quite curious around strangers. A bit shy, a Russian Blue will often watch a stranger from a distance, perhaps smell where the stranger has previously been, and even stalk a new person until it is ready to make introductions.
Known for their quiet and clean nature, a Russian Blue also likes a tidy environment and prefers a well-kept litter box. Despited their cleanliness, Russian Blues are very undemanding and usually okay with being left alone. They may be a good choice for households who are gone throughout the day. Russians are also known for being very sensitive to family moods, and can often be a good choice for families with children.
A note of caution though seemingly small, Russian Blues have healthy appetites and can be susceptible to weight gain. In 1981, Kasha, a famous Russian Blue, checked in at 25 pounds. So, try to get the low-calorie cat food.
The Russian Blue is a naturally occurring breed thought to have come from Arkhangelsk port in Russia.
