The appearance of the Saluki is one of total grace and balance. They have an unusual gait when they are at top speed: all four of their legs are in the air at the same time. The dog has a slim, greyhound-like body with long silky feathering on the ears and tail and the feet are thickly haired between the toes for protection from rough terrain.

Overall, the Saluki is an even-tempered and sensitive dog. Gentle and affectionate, but not demonstrative, the Saluki carries an air of regal independence. They are good with gentle, older children, but are too slim for vigorous roughhousing. They also have a tendency to become very attached to one person and remain a little aloof with everyone else.

As the royal dog of Egypt, the Saluki may be as old as the ancient civilization. Their bodies were often found mummified like the bodies of the Pharaohs. This regal heritage comes through in their sometimes haughty personalities. These fast and courageous dogs were also considered by the Bedouin travelers of Iran to be a sacred gift and highly valued possession.

Because of their hound ancestry and extreme speed, the Saluki is a dog with a seemingly endless amount of energy and a strong hunting instinct. Prospective owners need to be prepared to give their dog’s lots of exercise and a well-fenced yard.

For training purposes, they’re usually sensitive and don’t take well to harsh discipline or strictness. Positive reinforcement works best, meaning trainers need to be armed with love, trust, consistency and lots of treats.

In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for hypothyroidism, heart defects and tumors.
