In Siberia, there are hunters and fishermen known as Samoyeds. For centuries, they have used a beautiful, robust white dog to pull their sleds. This dog has become known by their name.
The compact muscular body of this hard-working breed indicates its strength. The Samoyed is a strong, dynamic and active dog with a thick coat designed to protect it from the Arctic cold.
Overall, the Samoyed is a highly intelligent breed, but often willfully resistant to formal obedience training. It eventually responds to firm, patient training that should be started at an early age. Once attached to its master, it proves to be a sociable and good-natured dog eager to please and work.
Samoyeds are gentle dogs and while they never actively seek trouble, they can handle an adversary if necessary. Even when devoted to one person, they tend to love everyone and have an easy-going, playful attitude. Unfortunately, that also makes them too friendly to be of much use as a watchdog, but they will at least bark to let you know that someone is there. Then they’ll roll over and wait to be pet.
During the spring and fall molting seasons, the undercoat is renewed and the old coat comes out in tufts. One can comb it deeply with a metal comb, which will speed up the shedding process and allow the Samoyed to regain its usual appearance more quickly. They have to be groomed at least twice a week, but more often during molting season. Adding fish and meat to their diet helps keep their coat shining, but this is definitely not a dog for neat freaks.
Samoyeds are typically a hardy dog, but they do have their share of health concerns. Hip dysplasia is common,as are eye problems like cataracts and glaucoma and other retinal problems.
