The Sandalwood Pony has a small, common head set on a short and muscular neck. The tail is set high and back, though very strong, is narrow. The legs are thin, but set atop hard feet. The conformation isn't perfect, but the breed is very hardy and known for its robust strength and enduring temperament. The Sandalwood Pony comes in all colors, though dun is the most common.
The Sandalwood Pony is considered one of the finest horses in Indonesia. They were named for the sweet smelling trees of their native islands, Sumba and Sumbawa. They are strong enough to carry adult male riders, but are also popular as a child’s pony, as well as for use in light draft work, riding, farming and racing. They're known for their easy management and long-lasting endurance. A popular island pastime is racing these ponies bareback for distances as long as three miles.
The most prized of this breed are selected as “dancers” in their native home. They are chosen for their lightness and elegant shape and then trained to perform a traditional dance. The horse is ridden by a small boy while its owner guides it with a hand-held harness. This dance is performed at many cultural events and is a long-held tradition.
Because they are pretty ponies that have nice movement and are highly valued in the show ring, the Sandalwood Pony has been exported to many countries, including Australia. They are still an integral part of their country's economy.
