The Scottish Deerhound is as graceful as the elk and deer they once hunted. Able to leap, run, jump and track – they’re a truly majestic breed full of energy and athletic ability. Despite their active background, they’re typically calm house pets and generally behaved, though they don’t take well to strict and formal training.

The Scottish Deerhound is a great dog for an active owner who loves to run in the woods, but they’re very subdued inside and won’t be jumping off the walls once you arrive back home. Gentle and tolerant, the Deerhound is usually great with other animals and children too. They’re often mild-mannered and can even be shy with strangers and new people. Because of this, they don’t make great guard dogs.

Most owners choose the Deerhound because of its majestic appearance and confident, independent and regal attitude. This is not a dog that fawns, demands attention or whimpers when you leave the house.

In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for bloat, cardiomyopathy and osteosarcoma.
