Though the Scottish Fold is noted for its trademark ear folds, the breed comes in a straight ear version too! The folded ear is a natural mutation of the cartilage that causes the cat's ears to fold forward towards the head. All Scottish Fold kittens are born with straight ears that will possibly begin to fold after approximately three to four weeks. Scottish Folds can be longhaired or shorthaired.
The Scottish Fold has a pleasant personality, making it a good natured and fairly docile cat. They can become very attached to their owners and exhibit a lot of physical affection. Also known for their laid back attitude and adaptability, Scottish Folds make good travelers who are able to relax in new environments.
Though not normally vocal, the Scottish Fold is said to produce a uniquely wide array of sounds and can sometimes be quite talkative. They're also known for the endearing tendency to sleep on their backs.
The breed originated as a spontaneous genetic mutation in Perthshire, Scotland. The gene that causes the fold is a dominant gene, but when two parents with folded ears breed - the kittens can be very susceptible to a degenerative disease affecting the joints that can sometimes fuse or lock the tail, knees or ankles. The breed is not accepted by many cat fancier associations because of these associated health risks.
