In the 1850's, Captain John Edwards of Wales crossed a number of hounds, corgis and terriers in order to produce the Sealyham Terrier. It was not recognized as a unique breed until 1910, but has gone to prove itself as a much-loved vermin hunter and family companion.
Because of their fierce terrier heritage, Sealyhams make excellent watch dogs and mousers. They are ideal for homes with older children and are also suitable for elderly people looking for companionship. For the most part, they get along well with other animals. While they will tolerate other dogs and have an instinct to live in packs, they can get still get disturbed by overly dominant or aggressive dogs.
Overall, the Sealyham Terrier is calm with a balanced disposition. They enjoy being with their human families and while they don’t actively dislike strangers, they can be wary of them. Even though the Sealyham Terrier isn't overly playful, they are very loyal and still enjoy the occasional romp. A daily walk is, of course, also necessary to promote emotional and physical well being.
Aside from being problem barkers, the Sealyham Terrier is not as difficult to train as other dog breeds. They are suitable for first time dog owners, although it will take some patience to develop an obedient dog. As with many other dog breeds, steady and consistent rewards will work better than punishment.
While the Sealyham Terrier does not need daily brushing, it does require trimming. This is best accomplished by a professional. Nails should be kept short.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for progressive retinal atrophy, deafness, glaucoma, lens luxation, cataracts, deafness, spinal problems and heart defects.
