Shetland Sheepdogs are ideal for families with small children and first time dog owners. They tend to be gently persuasive herder who love being with their families. Historically, the Shetland Sheepdog was used to herd cattle and sheep. Because of their herding heritage, a Shetland Sheepdog will be happiest if it has a job to do. They make good guard dogs and are also known to perform well in obedience and agility trials. Ideally, their daily job will involve plenty of exercise and the ability to utilize their natural herding instincts. These dogs need to run and walk every day. Because they have a tendency to chase cars, they shouldn't be allowed outdoors alone or off a lead in areas where they're likely to find cars or traffic.
Other than a tendency to become problem barkers, the Shetland Sheepdog is remarkably easy to train, though they'll require extensive socialization as puppies. Without this, they develop anti-social habits. Shetland Sheepdogs tend to need a lot of human company and companionship and socialization is crucial to ensuring that they can have these needs met.
The Shetland Sheepdog requires a moderate amount of grooming. Their coat needs to be brushed routinely to prevent matting. While combing should be avoided, using a little water when brushing will help remove mats. Shetland Sheepdogs love to be clean, but shampooing should only be done when necessary.
Depending on where you get the dog, Shetland Sheepdogs tend to be healthy. Some may suffer from eye and knee disorders. Others have been known to develop thyroid problems.
