The Shepadoodle is not a purebred dog, nor is it an AKC recognized breed. Shepadoodle dogs are a hybrid or cross breed developed from the Poodle and the German Shepherd. However, the cross is recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC).
Temperament and many other aspects of the breed will be dependant on which parent has the dominant genetic characteristics. Overall, these dogs are highly intelligent and versatile. They can fit into almost any setting and are also competent as working dogs.
For the most part, Shepadoodles gained the best of both parent breeds. Like the German Shepherd, they're extremely intelligent and can work as police dogs, guard dogs and as companion dogs. They also excel in obedience in agility trials. Shepadoodles tend to need a good bit of exercise and will enjoy a daily jog, along with plenty of toys to play with.
Shepadoodles are emotionally balanced and stable. Socialization and training can both be accomplished with classes. If training is managed properly, they'll grow up to be a wonderful addition to any household. Irregardless of whether you want a pet, a working dog, or a show dog, the Shepadoodle can easily accommodate your needs.
Similar to Poodles, the Shepadoodle rarely sheds. Brushing and other grooming requirements are minimal. Nails should be kept short to prevent paw splaying.
As a fairly new hybrid breed, there are no known, or established health issues. Shepadoodles, like any other dog, need yearly shots and routine checkups. Since German Shepherds are prone to dysplasia, it is important to ensure that the parent dogs are certified free of hip and other joint problems.
Both Poodles and German Shepherds have a diverse history. They have been known as guard dogs and working dogs throughout history. Both have also served in elite households and have been highly prized by their owners. The Shepadoodle is one of the most promising hybrids emerging today.
