Historically, the Shiba Inu is one of the more ancient dog breeds. Its origin is Japan and it’s descended from the same line as the Akitas. These dogs were primarily used for bird hunting and were almost exterminated during WWII. Today, these dogs are very popular in Japan and are developing a following in the United States.
The Shiba Inu tends to be charming and intelligent. They are ideal for first time dog owners and households with small children. While the Shiba Inu will get along well with cats, it’s not recommended around smaller animals. These dogs may also have problems with other dogs of the same gender. In addition, while Shibas are excellent with their families, they can be wary of strangers.
Shiba Inu's are very playful. They are as useful as watch dogs as they are a child's companion. Usually though, they're quiet and don't require much more than a daily walk. Although the Shiba Inu can withstand outdoor living, it tends to be happiest living in the house with its human family.
These dogs are fairly easy to train. As adults, they tend to be loyal and emotionally balanced. As with any other dog, adequate exercise will help manage a number of behavioral problems. In addition, the Shiba Inu should not be allowed off a leash.
Grooming needs for the Shiba are minimal. Their short coat is waterproof and tends to only need an occasional brushing. Shampooing should be kept to a minimum. Nails should be kept short.
On average, Shiba Inus are healthy for the duration of their lives. Some will develop hip dysplasia, as well as knee problems.
