Adult Size: Because the Shih-Poo is a mix between a Shih Tzu and a Poodle, their size can vary immensely. Typical weight is 13-20 pounds.

The Shih-Poo is not a purebred dog, nor is it an AKC recognized breed. Shih-Poo dogs are a hybrid or cross breed developed from the Poodle and Shih Tzu. However, the cross is recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC).

The Shih-Poo tends to be outgoing and friendly with their family. They're suitable for homes with children and will also do well with senior citizens looking for a companion dog. Because they're a mix breed, it’s not always easy to characterize their temperament. That said, they’re typically intelligent and good natured.

Shih-Poos do require a great deal of attention from their owners. They don't do well on their own and often have problems in kennels. For the most part, they'll tolerate other animals and dogs. While the Shih-Poo will appreciate a daily walk, they usually get sufficient exercise during play time and are often great apartment dogs. As with any other dog, behavior problems are reduced when the dog is given adequate exercise.

Other than a tendency to become problem barkers, Shi-Poos are easy to train. They are ideal for first time dog owners. Because they are highly intelligent, they will catch onto tricks quickly. When properly socialized to be around strangers, the Shi-Poo can easily become the centerpiece of your home. They are also very good as guard dogs.

Shih-Poos require little in the way of grooming. Nails should be kept short.

Because Shih-Poos re a fairly new hybrid, there is little information about their genetic or long term health issues. That said, it is already apparent that they do not have the kind of breathing problems commonly found in the Shih Tzus.

Historically, both Poodles and Shih-Tzus have served in the household of the elite. Both are competent watch dogs and are known to be beautiful, elegant show dogs.
