Silky Terriers tend to be good with their owners, but no one else. They are excellent watch dogs and typically won’t take to strangers. These dogs may not be suitable around children, as they have a tendency to snap and become emotional. Silky Terriers also do not deal well with rough treatment.

The Silky Terrier traces its origin to Australia, where they are primarily kepy household pets. As with many other terriers, they are excel at catching vermin. Although these dogs can be friendly and cheerful, they can and do chase other household pets. In particular, they should not be trusted around cats. The Silky Terrier may be suitable for an elderly person looking for a companion animal. Unfortunately, they may not take well to a new owner should the necessity arise.

While the Silky Terrier is eager to learn, it has a mind of its own. These dogs can easily become problem barkers. If left outdoors, they'll dig holes. Care needs to be taken to ensure they don't dig under fences and escape. Typically, these dogs need a lot of exercise and will benefit from a daily walk.

The Silky Terrier requires extensive daily grooming. Their coat mats and tangles easily so, many owners who keep their Silkies as pets opt instead to trim their dogs rather than dealing with their hair. These dogs also require frequent shampooing. In order to avoid chills, you'll need to make sure the dog is kept warm after its bath. Facial hair should be also be tied on top of the head so that the animal can see more easily.

For small dogs, Silky Terriers are unusual in that they sometimes suffer from dysplasia and a number of joint problems. Some may also develop epilepsy and diabetes. In rare instances, they can also have throat problems.
