If you have the time to devote to the Skye Terrier, it will be a loyal and brave companion. Although they are playful, they can also be very serious little dogs. These dogs are well suited to apartment living, as long as they’re not frequently exposed to other tenants or their animals. While a daily walk is recommended, the Skye Terrier is capable of meeting its exercise needs during playtime.
Although the Skye Terrier can appear very sweet and cuddly, their temperaments often make them unsuitable for homes with small children. They usually adapt well living with a stable adult couple. Because these dogs are notorious for biting, they’re not usually suitable for situations where strangers are often around. In addition, these dogs are not recommended for multi-animal households.
In general, the Skye Terrier requires a lot of work to train. Even with extensive socialization, they are not outgoing dogs. They also frequently become problem biters and barkers. They are rarely suitable for first-time dog owners.
Historically, the Skye Terriers trace their history to the Scottish Islands. They are a cross between the native dogs of Skye Island and Maltese dogs carried aboard a Spanish ship that was wrecked in the area.
The Skye Terrier also needs a moderate amount of grooming. Because their long coat has a tendency to mat, it needs to be brushed daily. Shampooing and professional grooming may be of some help. Nails should be kept short.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for hypothyroidism and perianal fistulas.
