The Sloughie is an FSS (Foundation Stock Service) breed. That means it isn’t recognized as an official breed by the American Kennel Club (AKC), but it will be soon. Groups like the Sloughi Fanciers Association of America are committed to obtaining recognition of the breed as well as preserving and celebrating it. For breed standards, breeders and showers can refer to the five different breed standards maintained by the FCI, the KC, the ANKC, the NZKC and the UKC.

The Sloughie is belived to have originated in Ethiopia and Egypt. It is designated as an African Sighthound breed, but shouldn’t be confused with the Afghan Hound. These dogs are used to hunt game and guard family possessions. They’re rare outside of Northern Africa, but they can be found.

The Sloughie is an elegant dog, renowned for its speed and cool demeanor. Of course, its smooth attitude makes it more of a refined working dog than a rambunctious and cuddly pal for the kids. As a sight hound, the Sloughie was bred for speed, stamina, and agility.

The Sloughie personality is usually one of aloofness with strangers, but intense devotion to their favored owners, For exercise, be prepared to take your Sloughie out for a daily, full-on workout. This exercise is especially important during the puppy years. And keep your Sloughie on the leash, their speed and strong hunt instinct means they don’t always come when they’re called and you won’t be able to catch them.

For the most part, Sloughies enjoy good health throughout their lifespan. They can sometimes be prone to progressive retinal atrophy and sensitivities to certain medications.
