The downfall of the cheerful Fox Terrier is its couragous and often daring personality. When allowed to be the boss of the house of even the neighborhood, the Fox Terrier can often get himself into trouble. Responsible owners should be willing to keep this dog on a tight leash.

Historically, the Fox Terriers trace their history to England. They were originally bred for fox hunting – trained to go into a fox’s lair and lure the fox out. To do this, the Fox Terrier needed stamina, agility endurance and, of course, courage.

Because of their agile and athletic nature, the Fox Terrier is sturdy, nimble, fast and packed full of energy. With sufficient exercise alongside an active owner, this dog can be happy anywhere from a rambling farmhouse to a downtown condo. These dogs also love toys and can usually entertain themselves for hours with a solid variety of chew toys and treats.

Because of their fox-hunting heritage, the Fox Terrier has an extremely high prey instinct. They’re not usually good with small family pets, like guinea pigs or rabbits. Because they’re also skilled diggers, owners should keep them in a well-fenced yard to prevent this little fellow from taking chase after an unsuspecting squirrel.

When training a Smooth Fox Terrier, persistence and consistency are key. The Fox Terrier is a great dog, once it knows its limits.

The Fox Terrier only needs a moderate amount of grooming – just regular brushing to keep shedding to a minimum. In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for cataracts, luxating lenses, heart problems and flea sensitivites.
