Historically, the Wheaten Terriers trace their origins to Ireland. They were originally bred as farm dogs – trained to herd, guard livestock, hunt vermin and tag along on hunting trips. To do this, the Wheaten Terrier needed courage, a strong hunting instinct and a protective personality.

Although rarely used for work purposes anymore, the Wheaten retains many of these instincts. This delightful breed is known for its soft and plush coat that gives it a teddy-bear feel.

Because of their terrier heritage, the Wheaten Terrier can be headstrong and occasionally insubordinate. Trainers need to teach them manners, household rules and good obedience from a young age. When training a Wheaten Terrier, persistence, patience and consistency are key. This wonderful dog does best with positive reinforcement and a firm, but fair trainer.

High-spirited and cheerful dogs, Wheatens are typically friendly and happy. They love getting up close and personal and are all about jumping on visitors and giving them lots of sloppy, doggy kisses. It’s best if owners prefer this kind of welcoming trait, rather than try to discourage it.

The Wheaten Terrier can require a lot of grooming. Its soft coat easily picks up yard debris, burs, leaves and tangles. Owners should be ready to commit to regular combings or frequent trimmings In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for cataracts, hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy and renal cortical hypoplasia.
