Often referred to as Longhaired Abyssinians, the Somalis are a striking breed. With their large, pointed ears, bushy fox tails, and big, almond-shaped eyes, the Somalis are arresting in their almost feral appearance. The Somali's coat is medium length and known for its soft and silky feel.

The Somali is extremely extroverted. This is a cat that thrives on companionship and should not be left alone for long periods of time. Though social, Somalis are 'hiders' and will often select a particular secret place where they like to go for their solitary time. This may be a favorite drawer, under a bed, or just a quiet nook where they can take a break from it all. Don't worry though, they'll be back sooner than you think.

Exceptionally active and energetic, Somalis are happiest in an environment that gives them room to explore and lets them have a chance to show off their acrobatic skills. They are also known for being very 'paws-on,' and will often hold objects or eat using their paws.

The Somali breed was a spontaneous mutation that occurred in the 1950s when several Abyssinian kittens in the same litter were born with long hair and bushy tails.
