The South African Boerboel is an FSS (Foundation Stock Service) breed. That means it isn’t recognized as an official breed by the American Kennel Club (AKC), but it will be soon. Groups like the South African Boerboel Breeders Association are committed to obtaining recognition of the breed as well as preserving and celebrating it.

Historically, the South African Boerboel originated in, naturally, South Africa. The breed is a molosser breed and is believed to have developed after inbreeding between native African species and larger breeds brought with Dutch, British and French settlers. The dog’s name comes from the Afrikaans language, the word “boer” means “farmer” and “boel” means dog, making the South African Boerboel the “farmer’s dog.”

As a farm dog, the South African Boerboel needs to be strong, protective, courageous, robust, obedient and reliable. The Boerboel typically exhibits a strong watchdog instinct and tends to make a great watchdog. Despite their stature, the Boerboel is very affectionate and patient with children, making them a nice choice for active families ready to give this unique breed love and lots of exercise.

Typically, the South African Boerboel is eager to please and ready to learn. They do well at obedience when working with a trainer that’s firm, fair, consistent and always sure to reward their best pupils with a tasty treat. Very little grooming is required for the South African Boerboel. An occasional brushing or combing will keep them looking sleek and healthy looking. Nails should be kept short.

For the most part, South African Boerboel enjoy good health throughout their lifespan, but they can be prone to hip dysplasia, heart problems, thyroid issues, bloat and possible eye conditions like progressive retinal atrophy.
