- Hardy
Many people confuse the Spanish Mustang with the American Mustang. This breed has a low tail, pronounced withers and a shoulder that is well laid back. It also has a convex nose and a forehead that can be either concave or straight. Its neck is well crested and it has a narrow chest. This breed has thick-walled feet or “mule feet” that are not easily bruised.
The Spanish Mustang is a very hardy and brave breed that very rarely experiences any injuries to their feet or legs. It comes in many solid colors including bay, chestnut, black, sorrel, brown, red dun, zebra, cream, palomino, buckskin and grullo. Silver dapple and lilac dun colors can also be seen, but they are very rare. This breed or horse has a wider range of colors than the Spanish Mustang. They are very athletic and hardy and can survive with very little food.
This horse is a descendant of the horses brought from Spain during the time of the American conquest. These animals helped to shape American history by serving many different roles, including cavalry mounts, war ponies, buffalo hunters and Pony Express horses. This endangered breed appears on the list of rare breeds and is considered to be extinct in Spain.
