The Spanish-Norman Horse is refined. The neck is long and graceful, and the hindquarters are strong. From the feet and legs that are sturdy, to its chiseled face, short back and and reclined shoulders, the Spanish-Norman exudes a touch of the majestic. It is mainly seen in grey, although bays and blacks are also acceptable. It is an elegant horse, a feature brought out by its thick and wavy mane and tail.
This courageous breed is often referred to as “the war horse of the ages,” though it is a newer breed derived from European crosses. Athletic yet gentle, the Spanish-Norman Horse consistently displays a fluid movement, one popular in sports like dressage – a form of “horse ballet” that tests a horse's grace and level of training. The are also very versatile and can excel at a number of events, including jumping and driving.
The Spanish-Norman is a very rare mix between the Andalusian in Spain & the Percheron draft horse in France. There are currently less than a hundred Spanish-Norman horses in North America. However, thanks to people such as Allan Hamid who started the Spanish Norman Horse Registry, the breed’s popularity and numbers are continuing to increase. Hamid, who is president of the Registry states, “The main goal is to produce an outstanding sporthorse that retains the presence, physical and mental abilities of the classic European warhorse. The Spanish-Norman is destined to make an important contribution to the equestrian world.”
