Groups like the Spanish Water Dog Association of America are committed to obtaining recognition of the breed as well as preserving and celebrating it. For breed standards, breeders and showers can refer to the four breed standards maintained by the FCI, the UKC, the KC and the NZKC.
The Spanish Water Dog - a muscular, medium-sized and hardy dog was obviously built for work. Their uniquely corded, waterproof coat and endurance make this dog an exceptional swimmer, while their loyalty, strength and protective instinct make them great shepherds. All of this combined with their intelligence and spirit make this dog an amazing asset to any proud owner.
Historically, the breed was believed to have been brought into Spain by Turkish traders selling sheepdogs. The breed has been documented since the 12th century, and is an established presence in its now native Spain. Spanish Water Dogs are remarkably versatile and work herding sheep, guarding flocks, retrieving fallen prey and entertaining loving families.
Overall, Spanish Water Dogs are very lively and active, yet extremely obedient with their master. Their courage, endurance, affection and loyalty, as well as their ability to get along with children have made them a very popular breed. If you’re looking for a dog that enjoys a game of fetch and lots of exercise, this is the pet for you. When training a Spanish Water Dog, consistency is the key. They’re quick to learn, but they also can be willful and may try to outsmart their owner given the opportunity.
The Spanish Water Dog’s corded coat should be sheared yearly, but never brushed. You can check the cords for matting, but don’t overdo it.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for hypothyroidism, hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, allergies, cataracts, Addison’s disease and endocrine pancreatic insufficiency.
