Historically, the Spinone Italiano breed traces their origins to the Piedmont region of Italy. They were originally bred as hunting dogs – trained to point, retrieve, track prey and tag along on hunting trips as companions. To do this, the Spinone Italiano needed courage, a strong hunting instinct and a pointer’s personality.
Though the Spinone Italiano is a sporting breed, it tends to be a little mellower than its sporting cousins. They’re typically happy with a moderate amount of exercise and a laid-back owners. These dogs are okay with apartment living as long as they get a good daily run and some quality play time with their owners.
The Spinone Italiano has a unique affection for children and will often seek them out over adults. The breed tends to be hesitant and shy with strangers, but forthcoming and patient with little ones. Their grandfatherly facial characteristics and soft coat means kids usually love too. These kind and gently dogs are typically social with other animals too.
Because of their hunter’s heritage, the Spinone is an efficient worker that loves the hunt. It’s an all-round hardy and robust breed capable of swimming, tracking and retrieving through all kinds of weather and conditions. They’re also easy trainers and tend to always keep an eye on their masters, waiting for direction rather than giving it.
The Spinone Italiano can require a moderate amount of grooming. Its longer, fluffier coat needs to be brushed and combed regularly, while burs and yard debris need to be picked out. In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for hip dysplasia and bloat.
