The Spotted Saddle Horse is a very colorful horse. The coat can be any color, but its pattern has to be seen above the horse’s hocks and behind the head in order to be registered. Common patterns include the tobiano or the overo design. Sabino markings and tovero patterns are seen, but not nearly as often. Tobiano patterning is characterized by white legs, rounded markings, and white over the back between the dock of the tail and the withers. Overo is a spotting pattern that has irregular and sharp markings. These marking are often more dark than white. The tovero pattern is a mixture of tobiano and overo patterning. The sabino is a slight spotting with white high on the legs and belly. The Spotted Saddle Horses's ears are long and it sports a refined head, muscular chest and slightly arched neck.

Good natured and friendly, the Spotted Saddle Horse is known for quickly becoming a family favorite. And, like many American breeds, they're famous for possessing a naturally smooth 4-beat gait, making it a very comfortable horse to ride. The Spotted Saddle Horse is also sure footed and well-suited to rough and rocky terrain, a perfect match for someone looking for a gentle trail rider.

Not one to be pigeonholed as a pleasure rider, the Spotted Saddle Horse also makes a great sport horse that can perform equally well in team penning, poles, model divisions, jumping, barrels, open performance and reining.

Gaited horse breeds such as the Tennessee Walking Horse, Mustang and Standardbred were bred with Spanish American Spotted ponies to form this relatively new and still developing breed.
