The Stabyhoun is an FSS (Foundation Stock Service) breed. That means it isn’t recognized as an official breed by the American Kennel Club (AKC), but it will be soon. Groups like the Ameri-Can Stabyhoun Association are committed to obtaining recognition of the breed as well as preserving and celebrating it. For breed standards, breeders and showers can refer to the two breed standards maintained by the FCI and the UKC.

The Stabyhoun originated in Friesland in the Netherlands. The word “hoon” or “houn” is actually simply Freisian for “dog.” The breed is rare and there are an estimated 3500 Stabyhouns in existence today, but breeders are working to grow this wonderful breed responsibly and carefully.

The Stabyhoun is a sturdy dog, renowned for its tolerance and patient demeanor. It’s a great dog with children and always exhibits a calm and friendly temperament. As a loyal sporting dog, the Stabyhoun is typically obedient, easy to train and very devoted. They tend to excel at hunting, agility trials, Frisbee, endurance and as a working retrieving dog.

For exercise, be prepared to take your Stabyhoun out for a daily, full-on workout. While this dog is very laid-back in the house, they need a good run every day to release pent-up energy. They have a strong retrieving instinct, so a good half hour spent playing fetch is a great way to get your daily exercise.

For the most part, Sloughies enjoy good health throughout their lifespan. They can sometimes be prone to epilepsy, though this condition is rare in this isolated, protected breed.
