The Staffordshire Bull Terriers can trace their origins to England. They were originally bred as fighting dogs – trained to bait bulls, fight other dogs, cock fighting and even bear baiting. To do this, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier needed courage, tenacity, a strong fighting instinct and an aggressive personality.
Although never used for fighting purposes anymore, the Staffordshire can retain many of these instincts and is subsequently the target of several breed ban attempts. However, with the right owner, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier can be a delightful pet full of energy and spunk and very unlikely to ever attack.
Because of their terrier heritage, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier can be headstrong and occasionally insubordinate. Trainers need to teach them manners, household rules and good obedience from a young age. When training a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, persistence, patience and consistency are key. This is not a dog for inexperienced dog owners.
Staffordshire Bull Terriers tend to get along great with children. They love to play and tend to be up for anything. This is a breed that does everything full force: work, play and love. For multi-animal families, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier does fine if socialized from a young age, but they don’t usually like to be approached or sniffed by strange dogs, particular ones of the same gender.
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier requires little grooming. Regular brushing with a currycomb is all that’s need to keep shedding to a minimum. In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for cataracts, hip dysplasia and entropion.
