Historically, the Sussex Spaniel breed can trace their origins to the Sussex region of England. They were originally bred as gun hunting dogs – trained to point, retrieve, track prey and be able to make their way through dense undergrowth and rough terrain. To do this, the Sussex Spaniel needed agility, a strong tracking instinct and a dependable personality.
Though the Sussex Spaniel is a sporting breed, it tends to be a little more relaxed than its sporting cousins. This breed isn’t lazy by any stretch of the imagination, it’s just typically happy to enjoy a nap from time to time. The Sussex is usually fine with apartment living as long as they get a good daily run and some quality play time with their owners.
The Sussex Spaniel is usually happiest when they get to be with their beloved masters. This is a fiercely devoted dog that enjoys nothing more than to goof around and show off for its owner.
Because of their hunter’s heritage, the Sussex Spaniel is an efficient worker that loves hunting and retrieval games. It’s typically an easy breed to train, but positive reinforcement usually works best.
The Sussex Spaniel requires very little grooming. A simple brush, the occasional trim and that’s it. In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for hip dysplasia, autoimmune disease, heart defects and hypothyroidism. Because the Sussex is a relatively rare breed, breeders have to work extra hard when weeding out genetic problems. Most Sussex breeder and fanciers are dedicated to promoting the overall health and soundness of the breed.
