The Swedish Vallhund breed can trace their origins to the age of the Vikings. They were originally bred as herding and hunting dogs – trained to herd cattle, hunt vermin and protect the homestead. To do this, the Swedish Vallhund needed tenacity, a strong herding instinct and lots of energy.

The Vallhund, like most dogs, prefers to be with its family as much as possible. They’re very sociable dogs that exhibit and even temperament and a sweet disposition with children, adults and other animals.

The Swedish Vallhund is usually happiest when they get to be with their beloved masters. This is a fiercely devoted dog that is easy to train and always eager to please. Not only are they obedient, they’re fast learners and ready to take on any challenge. This spunky breed often excels at obedience trials, agility and tracking tests.

Typically, the Swedish Vallhund will takes it energy cues from its master. It’s always ready to do if you want to hit the road, but it’s also happy to stay in and enjoy a quiet night on the couch. Overall, this is a low-maintenance breed.

The Swedish Vallhund requires very little grooming. A simple brush, the occasional bath and that’s it. In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, and cardiac arrhythmia. Because the Swedish Vallhund is a relatively rare breed, breeders have to work extra hard when weeding out genetic problems. Prospective owners may have to wait for an available puppy.
