The Thai Ridgeback is an FSS (Foundation Stock Service) breed. That means it isn’t recognized as an official breed by the American Kennel Club (AKC), but it will be soon. Groups like the American Thai Ridgeback Association are committed to obtaining recognition of the breed as well as preserving and celebrating it. For breed standards, breeders and showers can refer to the two breed standards maintained by the FCI and the UKC.
A muscular hound of the pariah-type, the Thai Ridgeback was named for a very unique characteristic - a defined symmetrical ridge that runs down its back where the hair actually grows in the opposite direction from the rest of the coat. It’s believed that the breed developed in Thailand and dates back almost 2,000 years. They were most likely bred as all-purpose dogs - capable of hunting game, guarding property, retrieving and watching children.
The breed has developed in a somewhat isolated region, making it somewhat independent and still wary of too much human contact. The breed tends to be aloof and retains some primitive instincts. It can be highly territorial and doesn’t tend to get along well with other dogs. They do best with confident owners able to teach obedience with a firm, but fair hand.
Typically though, once a Ridgeback respects a person, he quickly adapts. With the right owner, they quickly become a loyal dog ready to serve. A firm trainer who delivers a variety of routines and a strong hand usually gets the best results.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia and dermoid sinus.
