There are numerous pony breeds across Asia, a vast and diverging continent. In remote areas, like Tibet, there are no registered breeding programs or clearly defined stocks. Little is known about the Tibetan Pony, but we do know that it, like many Himalayan hill horses, is dun-colored and built for mountain work. They are surefooted animals capable of carrying heavy loads and are often the only means of transport through the mountainous terrain.
The Tibetan Pony is related to the more refined and well known Zaskari and the Spiti, a strong horse that became popular on the Indian peninsula.
The horses of Asia are descended from the last remaining primitive horse, the Asian Wild Horse. The Tibetan breed was probably also influenced by the Mongolian Pony and the mountain conditions of its homeland.
