The Tibetan Mastiff is a highly territorial bodyguard bred for its protective instinct and size. Although loving and affectionate with its family, the Tibetan Mastiff is an independent and dominant breed.
Historically, all Mastiffs descend from the ancient Molosser and Alaunt breeds. The Tibetan Mastiff is believed to be an ancient Tibetan dog originally bred for hunting and guarding. Because of this ingrained protection instinct, the Tibetan is happiest when he has a place to guard.
This is a dog that needs lots of space, a fenced yard and a healthy amount of socialization. All guest and visitors will be subject to a formal inspection, whether it’s their first time approaching your house or their fiftieth. Tibetans are usually wonderful with children, exhibiting patience, tolerance and a strong protection instinct.
The Tibetan has a slow metabolism and isn’t a very food-oriented dog. They typically eat less than other large dogs and a healthy, low-protein diet is recommended.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, patellar luxation, hypothyroidism, eye defects, cardiomyopathy, strokes, bloat, epilepsy and spondylosis. Because large, rare dogs are often more susceptible to genetic disorders, prospective buyers should always ask to see the parents and feel comfortable requesting genetic screening.
