The Tibetan Spaniel can trace its origins to Tibet. They were originally bred as monastary dogs – trained to serve as watchdogs and be favored companions. To do this, the Tibetan Spaniel needed keen eyesight, loyalty, tenacity and a lap dog’s personable demeanor.
Traditionally, the Tibetan Spaniel was the alarm dog that alerted larger dogs to the presence of intruders. Because of this, they have a strong barking instinct and love to keep an eye on the entire neighborhood from atop a couch or the nearest window seat. The Tibetan Spaniel can be entertained for hours with little more than a window and a good view.
Overall, the Tibetan Spaniel is a breed that’s eager to please and generally responds well to training and directions. They’ll greet most visitors with a bark and a wagging tail and are usually friendly and social with other dogs. These little spaniels also make wonderful apartment dogs, but are just as happy on a giant state.
Most of the year, the Tibetan Spaniel requires little grooming. Regular brushing is all that’s need to keep shedding to a minimum, though the dog will shed heavily in the spring. In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for progressive retinal atrophy, patellar luxation, Legg-Perthes and liver shunt.
