The infamous Tonkinese energy simply exudes from their physical appearance. These medium-sized, muscular cats appear both lithe and powerful at the same time. Distinguished by their big ears, they are a member of the Oriental family.

Tonkinese love heights almost as much as they love getting up there. Able to master almost unbelievable jumps for their size, Tonkinese are real acrobats. They're also brimming with an energy that really comes through in their outgoing, extroverted personalities.

Very friendly and quite intelligent, the Tonkinese is a social cat, and though it may not sit still for long, it does enjoy curling up in your lap or on your head for a bit of one-to-one time. These convivial felines with the colorful personalities can also be quite vocal. Owners must have a sense of humor to really appreciate the Tonkinese.

Because the Tonkinese is so lively and social, it shouldn't be left alone for too long. They can be a bit mischievous if left unattended.

Like the Burmese, the Tonkinese are able to trace their roots back to Wong Mau, a cat brought back from Burma to the United States by Dr. Joseph Thompson in the the early 1930s.
