The Tosa is an FSS (Foundation Stock Service) breed. That means it isn’t recognized as an official breed by the American Kennel Club (AKC), but it may be soon. Fanceiers are committed to obtaining recognition of the breed as well as preserving and celebrating it. For breed standards, breeders and showers can refer to the two breed standards maintained by the FCI and the UKC.

The Tosa originated in Japan and was originally bred as a fighting dog. Though this practice is rare, Tosa fighting groups still exist. Lovers of the breed hope to deter from this practice and work on developing the breed as a calmer, less aggressive dog. Because of these errant practices, ownership of the Tosa is often restricted in areas like the U.K., Australia and Germany.

The Tosa is a sturdy dog, renowned for its strength and power. It’s typically a great dog with children and always exhibits an immense loyalty to its master. The Tosa is very easy to train, but its high protection instinct should be curbed at a young age. This is a strong, dominant dog and not recommended for first-time or timid owners. That said, the patient and stoic Tosa often serves as a service and guide dog in its native Japan.

For exercise, be prepared to take your Tosa out for a daily run. While the Tosa can be laid-back in the house, they need a solid amount of exercise every day to release pent-up energy.
