The Toy Fox Terrier was first developed in the USA in the 1930's. It’s directly descended from the Smooth Fox Terrier, whose standard dates from 1876. The breed was miniaturized in the United States through careful breeding. Crosses with English Toy Terriers, Chihuahuas and Italian Greyhounds have refined its features and calmed its disposition.

As a terrier, the Toy Fox Terrier exhibits intelligence, tenacity, animation and a small stubborn streak. Despite their small stature, they like to think they’re the boss. As a toy, he tends to be devoted, with an endless and abiding love for his master.

This breed is an exceptionally intelligent, trainable dog with lots of experience working as an assistance dog for people living with physical disabilities. Its small size and easy trainability make it a popular hearing dog for people who are hearing impaired. The dog can be trained to take its human companion to the sources of sounds like the telephone.

Typically, the Toy Fox Terrier is a sociably dog and will get along with most people and other animals. They love to curl up with you and usually aren’t too discerning when it come to body warmth and a cozy lap.

The Toy Fox Terrier requires minimal grooming, just occasional brushing and combing. Their nails need to be trimmed short. Overall, it’s a healthy breed, but some are prone to Legg-Perthes (which is a disorder of the hip joint conformation).
